With school started and the normal craziness of everyday life, I'm getting a little behind on my posts. *Sigh*
Last week G sr was on vacation. It was kind of a last minute decision to take that week off. Sometimes that happens when you and your dad run your own business. You take it when you can or you just might not get it. We were grateful none the less. We didn't really have any extra money to do anything though so we just hung around at home and spent time together. Let us not underestimate the value of family time. It was great. I hate the end of vacation though cuz then I have to give him back. I selfishly want to keep him here to myself all the time. I guess it's better though cuz when he's on vacation, I'm on vacation. That translates into no housework being done. Eek. So all in all I guess it's a blessing that he gets to go back to work. Don't go getting me wrong, my house still looks like a bomb hit most of the time but I won't get started on the rant about why some of us moms are home all day and can't seem to keep the house clean. Another post for another day I suppose.
Anyway, what I wanted to really share with you is about the little date night we managed to squeeze in last week. My sweet girlfriend Robin had offered to watch the kids for us if we wanted to go out. I explained to her that we didn't have a lot of money for a fancy shmancy date. So she said, "Why don't you do dinner in? Just bring the kids over and you can go back home and have a nice romantic dinner and have some quality time together." Well that'll work I thought. For the life of me though I could not think of anything to fix for dinner. My brain was just not functioning (not all that unusual just so you know). So what it came down to was on the afternoon of our date I had to run an errand. On the way home I called my beloved to ask what he wanted for dinner in case I needed to stop by the store. He finally says, "I've got it covered. Just come home." Can't argue with that, right? Unless of coarse your a control freak like some people I know. I was able to let it go though and let him be in control of our date night from that moment forward.
And what a blessing it was.
So here's how the most perfect date night went...
After we got home from dropping the kids off at Robin's, G sr jumped out of the van and told me to wait there. Ooh, maybe he's got a surprise inside, or maybe he has to go get something set up, what could it be? My mind was racing with ideas and possibilities. When he appeared back outside I started loading my arms with all of the "stuff" that tends to accumulate in the van. (Where does this stuff come from??). He walks over to my door and takes everything back out of my arms and puts them back in the van. Hey, this van is a mess, I need to put that stuff away! Wait, ooh, exciting. I can't bring anything inside. My arms need to be empty. Then he grabs my hand, pulls me out and we start walking down the street. Hand in hand.
It was a perfect night, not too hot, not too cold. We walked in silence, and it was okay. We just enjoyed being there together, with each other. The simpleness spoke volumes.
We walked to our favorite hole-in-the-wall pizza place that's only about 2 blocks from our house. We both had a sandwich (they make the best) and enjoyed an uninterrupted conversation. No, He's teasing me! or I'm huuunnnggrryy! After dinner we walked next door to the convenience store and picked out an ice cream bar for the walk home. We both got a Nestle Crunch bar. They had the least amount of calories of any of them. Note: stay away from the Toll House cookie ice cream sandwich. Although it looks amazing, it's over 500 calories!!
Moving on. I won't tell you what I expected to happen once we got home. You can use your imagination for that. Wait...let's see if it was anything like what really happened.
We went back to the bedroom, sprawled out on the bed and...
opened our Bibles. Yup, we did a Bible study. We each had our Bible and also a commentary. We looked at the first chapter of Romans. Now Romans is loaded. It took us a long time to look at that first chapter. It's amazing how God opens up new things as we grow in our faith and re-read passages. We barely finished by the time I had to go pick up the kids. It was absolutely amazing. Seriously the best date we've had in a long time.
And I thought he wasn't romantic. Don't tell him I said that.
